GRANT RUSHMERE

After graduating from the University of Cape Town in 1992 Grant lived in Europe for the next 10 years pursuing a career as an international model. The opportunity to live in many of the great European cities: Milan, Madrid, London, Paris, Hamburg and Munich provided inspiration and motivation that would be harnessed on his return to South Africa.

Having started a family and returned to Cape Town, Grant followed his passion for branding and after a couple of successful ventures in the photographic industry launched Afro Coffee in 2004. The Afro brand encompasses a café concept (Afro Café), Afro Coffee and Afro Tea that are a celebration of African produce and contemporary urban African culture. The brand attracted the attention of Red Bull and in 2005 Grant partnered with Dietrich Mateschitz, founder of Red Bull, to take the Afro brand to Europe. Over the next 2 years Grant worked closely with the Red Bull team, learning how to build, grow, and market a global beverage brand. Red Bull bought the brand in 2007.

Using the experience of this period he spent the next 2 years developing the BOS brand of Ice Teas, launching in June 2010. The brand targets the consumer trend towards health, with an authentic, premium organic range of Rooibos ice teas that focus on the core idea that healthy can be fun. After sucessfully building the brand in South Africa, BOS launched in Europe in 2013 and is now distributed in 5 European countries - and expanding rapidly. A US launch is planned for 2017.

From being focussed on single brands; from product development to branding, marketing and operations, Grant has recently expanded his focus to launch new brands with multiple ventures currently underway and in the market. They include a craft beer brand, Striped Horse, a caffeinated chocolate brand, ZANG, and a craft spirits range with Lionshead Beverages.

The Accenture Innovation Index annually measures, recognises and rewards innovation and systems of innovation in South African organisations.

The Index is designed to provide a national benchmark for innovation, providing businesses and policymakers with an authoritative and objective snapshot of the state of innovation within their organisations and in South Africa.

In partnership with the Da Vinci Institute and TransUnion, Accenture applies best practice research approaches to provide a confidential customised innovation diagnostic report that identifies each participant's innovation strengths and weaknesses; benchmarks their innovation within their industries; and presents strategies that may help them gain competitive advantage. The programme culminates in the Accenture Innovation Conference where the findings of the Index are presented and the winners are announced. The Index also allows participants to submit concepts for consideration in the Innovation Conference showcase and awards.

Participation is open to all South African organisations—small, medium and large; listed or non-listed; NGO; public or private—with a commercialised product, process or service.
